DRAMA
Drama is taught throughout the School and is a popular choice at both GCSE and A level. Alongside the two main annual performances that are organizes in conjunction with the music department, there are a range of Drama evenings and junior and senior Drama clubs running throughout the year.
We are a vibrant, dynamic and thriving department with an increasing number and array of productions each year. We intend to cater for the needs of every student through the range of opportunities on offer from acting through stage management and lighting to directing. We aim to offer students the chance to use the forms, techniques and devices of drama to explore the world they live in and develop their own sense of self.
This year has been our busiest yet, with an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, L.O.V.E., which we are taking to the Edinburgh Festival in August, a Senior production of Shelagh Delaney’s The Memory of Water, the Prep pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, an evening of Cabaret, our very own School of Comedy, a student-directed version of Andrew Payne’s Mugged and a Senior production of D.N.A. for the National Theatre.
Through the many trips on offer we seek to broaden our students’ understanding of drama and allow them to experience the full range of work on offer in London. During the last year, students have seen a diverse range of work including: Motortown at The Royal Court, The Alchemist at The National, LoveSong at The New Ambassadors, Punchdrunk’s site-specific version of Faust in Wapping, The Seafarer at The National, the RSC’s The Tempest at The Novello, Pool (No Water) at The Lyric and Piano/Forte at The Royal Court.
For the past two years, we have been part of the National Theatre Connections programme, performing at The Lyric in Hammersmith with Ursula Rani Sarma’s The Spider Men and Dennis Kelly’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid. We have also participated in the Shakespeare Schools Festival.
The Drama Department is continually looking for new ways to expand and actively encourages the development of student-led projects.
