HISTORY

History is taught as a separate subject from Year 4 to the Sixth Form. Topics range from the Romans, Greeks and Tudors to totalitarian regimes and the Holocaust. A wide variety of learning techniques are used, from model making and role play to the more traditional essays and source analysis. Within the department there have been visits to the Golden Hind, Bodium Castle and Ypres battlefields as well as an A level tour of Moscow and St Petersburg.

The History Department is enthusiastic and popular at The Harrodian. Take-up at GCSE and A-Level has grown considerably and it is currently one of the most popular AS and A2 subjects. History is compulsory at Key Stages 2 and 3, but is an option at GCSE and A-Level. We also offer Government and Politics at A-Level.

Courses (from September 2006)

In the Prep School, the History course closely follows the KS2 and 3 National Curriculum ranging from the Classical World, through the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period and the Industrial Revolution. We break from the chronological approach in the 12s to revisit the Tudors and Stuarts for Common Entrance.

NB. This year, we are adapting the curriculum to make it more chronological. Consequently, the 10s and 11s will both study the Middle Ages while the transition takes place.

Senior History focuses on the Twentieth Century World. The 13s look at a number of aspects of the twentieth century.

At GCSE we follow the OCR Modern World syllabus, focussing on international relations between 1918 and 1945. Our in-depth studies include Weimar and Nazi German, Revolutionary Russia and Prohibition in the USA. There are two pieces of written coursework to be completed in the 14s.

AS History (AQA)

  • Unit 1 – Tsarist and Revolutionary Russia 1855-1917
  • Unit 2 – Britain 1895-1918
  • Unit 3 – Two coursework essays from Units 1 and 2

A2 History (AQA)

  • Unit 4 – Totalitarian Ideologies (Fascism, Nazism, Communism) 1848-1956
  • Unit 5 – Britain 1918-1951
  • Unit 6 – The Holocaust 1938-1945

We also offer Government and Politics at A-Level. We follow the Edexcel syllabus and concentrate on Political Idologies (Route B) at A2.
