Classical Civilisation

Classical Civilisation is a varied and diverse course, which includes elements of Literature and Drama, Archaeology and History.  All aspects of the course are studied in English; the course is very attractive for those pupils who are drawn towards the Humanities and who are interested in the study of the Western spirit, its culture and roots.

Senior school curriculum
Students will be introduced in Classical Civilisation to the world of the Greeks and Romans, Mythology and Literature, and History and Philosophy (Socrates).   It is not a requirement for students to have studied Latin prior to studying Classical Civilisation. They will have the opportunity to learn about the culture and society of the Greeks and Romans in the 5th and 1st century respectively. They will also have the pleasure of reading some of the greatest works of Classical literature, such as Sophocles’ Antigone, a story of the struggle between one’s devotion to one’s family and one’s country, and Homer’s Odyssey, the story of Odysseus’ journey home, and Iliad, the story of the fighting at Troy.

Advanced level
Students will continue to develop their knowledge of literature in the Greek and Roman world, studying topics such as Greek tragedy (Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus) and Greek comedy (Aristophanes, Menander, Plautus). They will practise literary criticism and essay writing, looking closely at the style and language of each author.  Students will also learn to appreciate each work of literature in their cultural, historical and social contexts.
