Inside London Art

In February, Harrodians got an exclusive insight into the workings of the London art scene when leading gallerist Sadie Coles, visited the school for a special evening talk and Question and Answer session.  In March,  Sixth Formers were provided with an even rarer opportunity to see Sadie in action when they visited both of her London galleries.

The visits were part of a fascinating and enlightening day tour of London art destinations for our Lower Sixth Art students. The day began with a trip to the Royal Academy where the group took in From Life, an exhibition which traces a line from the origins of the RA in the 18th century to the present day and examines one of the oldest art disciplines of all: painting and sculpting ‘from life’.  After starting in what might be called a traditional artistic skill, the group's next stop at Sadie Coles was distinctly modern. Sadie herself was our guide to an exhibition of the work of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, a British artist known for her reworkings of iconic moments from cultural history in improvised performances and who was nominated for the Turner Prize, in 2012.

After this taste of performance art, the next stop on our list of destinations was Sadie Coles HQ Gallery where the group was introduced to the work of Douglas Bader whose installations, videos, and texts presented work based around ideas of 'exchange, authorship, and the boundaries of the art object'.

Last stop in a fascinating and kaleidoscopic day was Gagosian, one of the leading modern private galleries where Sixth Formers were treated to a show by Glenn Brown, an artist whose vivid and challenging work is said 'to transcend time and pictorial conventions'.
