A Week in the Life of Harrodian Artists

Posted on: 21/09/2018

Prep School pupils have been learning about different mediums and how to combine them in their art work, along with particular art techniques such as divisionism and pointillism. They have also been focussing on the use of shapes, in particular circles/spots and how to use colour. In this photo, one of our 9s is leafing through The Complete Spot Paintings by Damien Hirst, a prized book in the school's Art Library collection. Each of the pupils were able to look at the book (with protective white gloves!) to gain inspiration and ideas about the representation of circles and spheres in their own still-life projects.

Elsewhere in the Senior School, our 14s art pupils were offered a fantastic opportunity to visit ‘Sacred Noise,' a dedicated exhibition at Christie’s exploring themes of religion, faith and divinity in post-war and contemporary art after hours, with a tour from the curator Cristian Albu.

The group had the opportunity to watch a live auction as well as collecting inspiration for their current GCSE coursework titles 'Being Alive'. The exhibition included work by Stanley Spencer, Francis Bacon, Damien Hirst and Francisco de Zurbaran to name a few.

Meanwhile our Sixth Form art students have been able to benefit from weekly life drawing sessions. They have been exploring a range of materials, considering mark making and gestural line to convey form.

Life drawings are considered an important part of one's portfolio for those applying to Art and Architecture school and there has recently been coverage in the press about the benefits of teaching life drawing in schools in relation to body image.
