Maths Challenge

Harrodian’s 11s and 12s (Year 7 and 8) provided cheering evidence of Harrodian’s growing Mathematics prowess when they all took part in the annual Maths Challenge organised by the charity United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT).

‘Usually, it’s only our top two Math sets that take part in the annual Maths Challenge,’ says Mr Tony Lee, Head of Harrodian Mathematics. ‘But this year (Maths Teacher) Mark Curtis persuaded the school to allow all our 11s and 12 pupils to participate and I’d like to thank him on behalf of our pupils because they absolutely smashed it!’

Of the 197 mixed ability pupils who took part in the Maths Challenge, a remarkable 108 received commendations for their work.

The figures prove Mr Lee’s point. Of the 197 mixed ability pupils who took part, a remarkable 108 received commendations for their work.  In the 11s (Year 7), there were 4 Gold, 23 Silver and 21 Bronze certificates awarded and  in the 12s (Year 8),  there were 16 Golds, 15 Silvers and 29 Bronzes handed out.

The Best in School certificate was awarded to both Sasha (11s) and Efe  (12s), both of whom scored the top mark. Both have been invited to take part in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad follow-on round (11th June).

Naturally Mr Lee was impressed by the stellar performance of both groups. ‘The Challenge gives pupils the chance to test their ability to engage with Maths problems that go beyond the curriculum,’ he says. ‘So I want to congratulate our 11s and 12s for rising to that challenge so impressively. I'm sure we'll be offering both year groups the opportunity to take part in the test again next year.’
