Harrodian is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic and inspirational Singing teacher to join our successful and vibrant Music department. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled and experienced Singing teacher, comfortable teaching in a range of styles to include Musical Theatre and Pop, as well as traditional Classical repertoire. The ability to play the piano to a good standard in order to accompany pupils and play for concerts and recitals is also desirable.
The successful applicant must be able to motivate and inspire children of all ages and abilities to make good progress in their instrument (Voice in this case), develop their musicianship and to foster in them a love of music across a range of styles.
This position is for a half a day of teaching per week in the first instance, although there is the scope to increase this to a whole day with input from the successful candidate. Candidates must be able to teach on Thursdays during term time. The role is term time only and the post-holder will work on a self-employed (peripatetic) basis.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Teaching individual singing lessons, from beginner level to Grade 8 and beyond.
- Preparing pupils, when and where appropriate, for the requirements of Grade Music, GCSE and A Level exams in collaboration with the music department.
- Preparing pupils for performances, competitions and auditions, as well as for other school events such as concerts, assemblies and recitals.
- Coaching for occasional musical activities.
- Additionally, we would welcome a willingness to engage with occasional rehearsals if suited to the skills of the candidate.
- The post-holder will be expected to deliver a minimum of thirty individual lessons per pupil in each academic year and may be invited to take on other duties, on an occasional or regular basis, depending on the needs of the students and the School.
- There is no guaranteed number of pupils or hours of teaching.
- The post-holder will be expected to conform to the administrative and reporting procedures of the School, writing termly reports on individual pupils; managing their own timetables with the support of the Music Administrator; maintaining lesson record sheets, and reporting absences from lessons.
- They will also be expected to be supportive of the activities of the department.

This post reports to the Director of Music.
Accommodation and Equipment
There are four full-time music teachers at Harrodian as well as a team of 17 visiting music staff, teaching a variety of instruments. The Music Department is housed in its own building and incorporates 3 teaching classrooms, 7 practice rooms and an auditorium space for concerts and recitals. There are 12 iMacs in the department, each running Logic Pro X, Garageband and Sibelius software.
Salary
Visiting Music Teachers at Harrodian are self-employed at a rate of £57.00 per hour and the contract for lessons is between the pupil and the teacher. Our Visiting Music Teachers are self-employed and will invoice parents directly. Instrumental and vocal lessons are given on a weekly basis.
Founded in 1993, the school is co-educational and set in SW London in 25 acres of grounds with excellent facilities. It is a calm and beautiful place to work. Individual music lessons are given in all the usual instruments and singing. Over 40% of the school’s pupils have music lessons in school. Approximately 400 instrumental and vocal lessons take place each week as well as a wide range of choirs and ensembles.
