Geography taps into children’s natural curiosity. It teaches them about their immediate environment and explores how this knowledge might be relevant to the wider world.
Both physical and human geography are explored through topic based work on subjects such as - different localities, countries and their cultures, environment and sustainability, weather, and land formation. Great emphasis is placed on direct experience and practical activities using the extensive school grounds and local area
Basic geographical skills such as direction, sense of place and mapping routes are taught from Reception (as part of the EYFS Understanding the World).
These skills are then further extended to include globe or map reading for geographical features, drawing and interpreting maps, carrying out research, investigations, analysis and problem solving.
