At Harrodian, our aim goes well beyond ensuring the competence in mathematics that is essential to our pupils in all aspects of their daily lives. We want our children to enjoy the subject at school, whilst making good progress in every mathematics class. We hope that our lessons inspire the confidence in our pupils to tackle increasingly challenging problems.
In the Prep School we follow a Singapore-style curriculum, from the 8s to the 10s, that helps pupils to develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of mathematics in every stage of their learning. We try to ensure that our pupils acquire mastery of the mathematical facts and concepts to which they have been exposed, equipping them to move on confidently and securely to more advanced material.
We believe that acquiring mastery of mathematics is something for all pupils and that 'teaching for mastery' approaches can enable all pupils to succeed in mathematics.
When they reach the 11s, pupils embark upon a five-year scheme of work, with a strong emphasis on problem solving skills, which is designed to prepare them for the rigours of the new 9-1 GCSE examinations. We aim to continue to lay the foundations for a successful transition into Senior School mathematics. It is this hard work and dedication that pays dividends in the much later public examinations.
