A group of enthusiastic Film/Media Studies pupils from the 15s to Upper Sixth embarked on a thrilling journey to the UK's largest IMAX cinema in Waterloo. Accompanied by their teachers, Mr. Sam Cullis and Mr. Tom Grey-Parkinson, the students eagerly anticipated the screening of Killers of the Flower Moon.

The film, directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, is based on David Grann's best-selling book, delving into the dark and mysterious murders of Osage Native Americans in the early 20th century. What makes Killers of the Flower Moon particularly special is the union of Scorsese's longtime muses - Robert de Niro and Leonardo di Caprio. Despite having worked with both actors separately many times, this is the first of Scorsese's films that feature both of them together. The last time that both actors appeared conjointly in a film was 30 years ago in Michael Caton-Jones's film This Boys' Life and so there was great anticipation and excitement to see them on-screen together again, after so many years.

As the lights dimmed and the students settled into their seats, they were transported to a world of intrigue, suspense, and historical significance. The colossal IMAX screen elevated the cinematic experience, providing an immersive journey into the past.

Following the screening, the students were treated to an exclusive tour of the projection room. Here, they had the rare opportunity to witness IMAX film reels from recent blockbusters like Oppenheimer, gaining insight into the technology and craftsmanship behind these cinematic masterpieces.

As someone who wants to study Film Studies at A-level and beyond, this was a fantastic trip and the exploration of film technology was insightful

Emily P (15s) Film Studies

Expressing their enthusiasm, Jamie, a 15s student studying Film Studies, gives the trip a resounding '10/10 for film and trip quality.' Inigo, an Upper Sixth student in Media Studies, shares his thoughts on the film's duration, stating, 'it was 3 hours and 40 minutes, so too long in my view, but it is a breathtaking film despite that.' Meanwhile, Emily, a 15s student studying Film Studies, is more detailed with her feedback when she says, 'As someone who wants to study Film Studies at A-level and beyond, this was a fantastic trip and the exploration of film technology was insightful - who would have known that it took two whole days for the IMAX film reel to be prepared in every cinema through splicing together a 11 mile reel!'

The trip was a resounding success, leaving the students with a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking and a memorable experience that will hopefully inspire them as they continue with their future learning in Film/Media Studies.
