Thirty-eight pupils from our 11s and 12s (Year 7/8), along with seven staff, enjoyed an unforgettable week of skiing in Bormio. With sunshine and fresh snow every day, it was quite literally a week of blue-sky skiing—but, figuratively speaking, also a week of opportunity, adventure and fun.
Famous for its long runs and the legendary Stelvio piste—one of the world’s most renowned downhill slopes, used in numerous World Cup races—this Italian resort, set to be a venue for the Winter Olympics next year, proved to be the perfect destination.
Grouped by ability, pupils took part in both morning and afternoon ski lessons, making the most of their time on the slopes. "It was much harder work than being on a family ski holiday," says Florence in the 11s. "We were up early every morning at 7.30am and wouldn't come back down until the last lift! But it meant that we all improved and our skiing got so much better."

Evenings were packed with fun après-ski activities, including ice skating (a particular favourite of the group!), pizza night, movie night, and curling.

New friendships were formed, and existing ones strengthened, as Lucas (new to Harrodian in the 11s/Year 7) confirms: "When I started in the 11s there were some groups of Harrodians who knew each other really well because they had already been at school together for a long time. This trip, like our Mendip Hills one in September, was another chance to mix us all up a bit, and it really worked! The added bonus was getting to know some of the 12s too!"

The trip was not just about skiing—the food was also a highlight. Italian cuisine, particularly pizza and gelato, proved to be a firm favourite. Pupils also appreciated the opportunity to get to know their teachers better in a more relaxed environment.
And what did the children take away from the experience? Beyond improving their skiing skills, they learned the value of organisation, independence, and teamwork. Head of 11s, Dan Maybury, sums it up perfectly: "The kids were outstanding. Not only did they improve their skiing skills, but they also represented the school with great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Their positive attitude and teamwork made the trip even more special, and we couldn’t be prouder of them!"
