A Call to Change

Posted on: 14/06/2019

The Climate Change protests earlier in the year inspired a group of our Senior School/Sixth Form students to make a change. They decided it was time for our school community to recognise that sustainable environmental change is essential for our future and a '3 Weeks for Change' campaign was born.

As part of the project, the group is launching a Harrodian Green Day on Wednesday 26 June. Jack Harries, former Harrodian pupil, documentary maker and environmental activist, will be coming in to launch the day with a presentation in assembly.

Children across the school in the Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior/Sixth Form are invited to take part in a Green Mufti on Green Day (Wednesday 26 June) and can wear something green. The idea is to re-use and wear items of green clothing that they already have or to borrow them, rather than go out and purchase them. Children who wish to take part will need to buy a wristband for £2 from their Form Tutors which will allow them to participate in the Mufti day.

In addition there will be a sponsored Bikeathon taking place on the school grounds (details about which will be sent to parents shortly) and a vegan cake sale.

In the lead up to Green Day, our 13s pupils have organised an Eco Concert after school in the Theatre on Monday 24 June (see poster below):

There will be sets performed by Sampson and Harrison in the 12s, Grace in the 13s and also by Ivy (formerly known as Prime), the ukulele girl-group, who won in their category at Battle of the Bands earlier on this year and who played an impressive set at the Isle of Wight Festival.

The Ivy girls (Grace and Romy in the 13s) have also written and recorded their own song called Desert Rain to fit in with the green theme. It will be available to download on Spotify from Wednesday 26 June onwards. Please listen to the song below by clicking on the link below:

Our Summer Fair on Saturday 22 June is also adopting a 'Keep it Green' theme as part of the 3 Weeks for Change campaign. A group of Senior/Sixth Form pupils and prefects will be running various environmentally-themed stalls selling items ranging from vintage clothing, second-hand uniform, healthy smoothies (made from a machine that is powered by a pedal bike!), eco-friendly household products and more.

Tickets for all these various events will be available to purchase from Rachelle at Reception and the Senior Office as of Monday 17 June. All the money raised will be donated to Greenpeace and Thames 21.
