After a year's break due to Covid restrictions, Greek and Latin academics, teachers and students  assembled again at the 12th Harrodian-hosted conference for Sixth Form classicists

On Friday 12th November, our Classics department hosted a Sixth Form Harrodian Classics conference, an event that has become a firm fixture in the school calendar since 2009.

Four prestigious speakers from one of the country’s top universities, lectured on topics relevant to students’ studies. Dr Armand D’Angour of Jesus College, University of Oxford, spoke on Catullus; Professor Richard Jenkyns of Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford, on Homer and Virgil; Dr Rachel Wood of Lincoln College, University of Oxford, on Greek Art and Dr Tristan Franklinos of Trinity college, University of Oxford, on Ovid’s Amores and Heroides.

The event was well-attended by 150 students and staff from schools in and around London including Eton College, St Paul’s, Westminster, Haberdashers' Aske's Boys', Tiffin's Girls', Notting Hill and Ealing High, Lady Eleanor Holles, Queen's Gate, Hampton, Godolphin and Latymer, Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School and Whitgift.

One of our Sixth Form Latin students, Nara-May, was particularly thrilled she could be there. 'We were able to delve into really interesting aspects of Latin that aren't directly part of our curriculum but they gave us an even greater understanding and appreciation of classical texts. Meeting and interacting with fellow classicists offered the opportunity to exchange ideas and thoughts in a wider circle than day to day life too,' she enthuses. Other visitors were equally appreciative of the chance to attend a live lecture again and gain insights from experts in the field.

Thank you to our Head of Classics Mrs Genevieve Seaton and her department for organising such a successful event.
