Up for Debate

Posted on: 30/01/2020

Debating Club is thriving at Harrodian with two different time slots to accommodate numbers.

Led by Mr Wardell, Teacher of Religious Studies and Philosophy, pupils in the 8s upwards can spend time over their lunch break preparing and researching a variety of motions and taking part in adhoc debates.

Controversial motions enjoyed by our debaters this term have included this house would: prefer a one-world government; punish parents for the crimes of their children; not trust the promises of those who do not believe in hell; hold a second referendum on our membership of the EU.

Two of our keenest members of the club, Sonya and Zanthe (L6), find that debating helps them to improve their public speaking and to be more knowledgeable about current affairs. They both represented Harrodian at the second round of the English Speaking Union’s School Mace competition where they argued articulately opposing the motion ‘This House regrets the commercialisation of Pride.’

Both girls won, beating the opposition from Putney High School, Bolingbrook Academy, Kings College School Wimbledon and St Paul's  Boys' School. They are now going through to the regional finals.

On asking them how they achieved their victory, Zanthe replies, 'Sonya and I worked really well as a team and were even more responsive as a result. We rebutted all of their points and covered a great deal of ground.’

We wish both girls the best of luck as they go through to the regional round.
