From Edinburgh to the North Pole

What sort of adventures can taking part in Duke of Edinburgh lead to? For explorer George Wells, who kindly visited Harrodian to meet Senior students last week, DofE marked the first step on a path to expeditions and explorations that have taken him to the Himalayas, Greenland and even the North Pole.

In the special presentation he gave at Senior assembly, George met and congratulated a number of Harrodian pupils who had recently gained their DofE certificates. In his talk, he explained that it was schoolboy DofE expeditions that first whetted his appetite for adventure. As a university student he visited the Himalayas, graduated to trips to the Arctic and then wrote his own name in exploration history by earning himself a place on a daring expedition that used snow kiting to set the record for the fastest crossing of the Greenland icecap. George emerged unscathed, apart from a touch of frost bite, which he described in grisly detail.
