Harrodian launched its first Christmas charity single at the school Carol Concert on 10th December. Holding Hands at Christmas, is a Christmas song with a melody written and produced by school Music Technician Dan Almond and lyrics written both by Mr Almond and by Sixth Form students Lauren, Luca, George and Ella. Jointly performed, sung by them and by children from the Rugby Portobello Trust (RPT) in West London and members of Harrodian’s Pre-Prep school choir, all funds raised will go to help the Grenfell and Acton communities.

Joyously celebrating a spirit of community in the festive season, the song's launch marks the latest step in a relationship between Harrodian students and RPT children which has been growing since Harrodian Sixth Formers initiated Project Portobello earlier this year. The scheme began with a fund-raising drive to create a community café as a facility for the many children who visit RPT every day to use its sports hall and other facilities. ‘RPT is an amazing charity that helps people directly every day,’ says Alex, one of Harrodian’s Charity prefects. 'We wanted to do something that would help them practically and directly.'

This year, the relationship has become more musical. RPT has a well equipped music studio on site but there were very few musical instruments for young people to use. ‘We decided to ask parents and pupils if they had any unused musical instruments which they could contribute to RPT,' says Alex. Soon the instruments were flooding in, among them, 28 guitars, 8 ukuleles, three keyboards and a trumpet, a saxophone and a drum kit.  'The success of that drive really surprised us,' says Alex. 'Thanks to the great commitment of the music department  and our Sixth Form musicians from day one, the Christmas single has taken off just as quickly.'
