Muddy but Unbowed

A trip to the picturesque banks of the River Tillingbourne in Surrey has long been a fixture in the calendar of the Geography department at Harrodian. The Tillingbourne's proximity to south-west London and its manageable scale make it the perfect place to learn about the way a river changes as it flows through the countryside. But when the 11s visited the Surrey Hills in late February the Tillingbourne was far from its usual serene self.

IMG_2057.jpgThe plan for our band of pupils was to use tools and instruction provided by the brilliant team at the Juniper Hall field centre to measure changes in depth, width velocity and gradient of the Tillingbourne at three separate sites. But just as the groups arrived at their first  testing sites, the heavens opened and a steady downpour set in.

The poor weather meant the groups' research was restricted to only two sites. But as these pictures show, poor weather wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of our band of young geographers. Over the coming weeks, pupils will be working through the data, making graphs and charts and completing work on their first field study project in the rather cosier spaces of the Harrodian Prep classrooms.
