Harrodian's first Express your Culture Day was a joyous celebration both of personal and national identities and of the spirit of friendship within our school community.

None of us were entirely sure how Harrodians would respond to the opportunity to take part in the school’s first ever Express your Culture day on Thursday 23rd March. But as the pictures of the day that accompany this article vividly illustrate, Express your Culture is clearly  an idea whose time has come.

Pupils and teachers clearly relished the opportunity to dig into their family or personal history and heritage, to dress up in national or local costumes, and to tell people about their sense of culture and/or identity. In the case both of our Pre-Prep pupils and our Head of Design Mr Murray –  some even made global  maps tracing and locating the detail of Harrodians’ personal origins all around the world.

Parents also played a huge part in the day’s success. Remarkably 25 different stalls each representing a different country assembled in the forum provided by Harrodian trusty marquee. Here parents, often in national dress, welcomed visitors, some providing demonstrations of national skills (such as Chinese calligraphy or Iranian dancing), almost all offering samples of delicious culinary delicacies.

It all added up to an exuberant, enthusiastic and energetic day of celebration not just of personal and national identities and cultures but also of the open-hearted spirit of acceptance and friendship that we value so highly within our Harrodian community.
