Pilgrim Philosophers

Our Lower Sixth students are currently the first year group to study Philosophy as a stand-alone A Level subject.

To celebrate this new addition to the A Level curriculum, teachers Ms Carpenter and Mr Wardell,  organised their first Philosophy trip.

They took ten Lower Sixth Philosophers on a weekend trip to Edinburgh. On arrival they were whisked off on a walking tour of the city with a guide where they learnt more about Hume and the Scottish enlightenment. Hume and his views on impressions and immediate experience versus ideas and memories are a core part of the Philosophy syllabus.

As part of their walk, they visited the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, stopped at the statue of Hume on the Royal Mile and paid homage to his tomb, a cylindrical tower on the Edinburgh skyline.

The group then travelled to North Berwick. The train journey there allowed them to study a set text together, much to the delight of their teachers! They enjoyed a long walk on the beach, taking in the stunning views of the Berwickshire coastline and then sat on the rocks to reflect on the set text they had just read and were led in their discussion by Mr Wardell.

They also had the chance to meet up with former Harrodian student, Louis Norman, who is in his final term studying Philosophy & English at the University of Edinburgh.  He only has one more essay to hand in before he has finished his degree!

Louis gave them a tour of the university, walking them across the meadows to the centre of the campus at George Square. Our Lower Sixth students, many of whom aspire to studying Philosophy or PPE at university, were interested to hear Louis talk more about the course on offer at the University of Edinburgh.

The trip came to an end with a visit to a vegetarian restaurant, where they enjoyed a meal together and an interesting discussion about the ethics of not eating meat.
