In search of King Henry

Our PP3 children have been studying Henry VIII and food in Tudor times as this term's History topics. To enhance their learning, pupils visited Hampton Court Palace where they participated in an interactive workshop entitled 'Investigating King Henry."

They used their investigative skills to learn about the Tudor King.

By examining replica objects, based on historical artefacts from contemporary Tudor sources, children found out how the past is constructed from a range of sources and they discussed concepts such as bias. Children then weighed the evidence to construct a balanced opinion of King Henry VIII by asking key questions. They consequently found out there was more to Henry VIII than popular stereotypes and learnt about the things that happened to him at Hampton Court Palace.

Afterwards the children went on a tour of King Henry's royal apartment and were fascinated to visit the Haunted Gallery, where the ghost of his fifth wife Catherine Howard, the Screaming Lady, is meant to roam.

In small groups the children were able to also look round the huge kitchens, chapel, banqueting hall and looked at some of portraits of the Tudors on display.
