This year marked an exciting development for Harrodian’s annual Spring Concert, with the whole-school event divided into two separate evenings for the first time by age. The first concert showcased pupils from the 11s upwards, while our younger musicians from Pre-Prep and Prep will take to the stage in their own event at the end of term. This approach allows even more students the opportunity to perform, giving committed musicians a valuable platform to share their work and build confidence.

In this first Spring Cabaret Concert, held on Wednesday 10 March, a mix of choirs and soloists, instrumentalists, ensembles and orchestras took to the stage, performing a wide range of repertoire.
Our Harrodian music department is vibrant and full of opportunity, with consistently high standards across all year groups.

As always, it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the breadth of musical talent at Harrodian. The evening was compered by Upper Sixth students Jamie L and Woody S in their final outing in the role, entertaining the audience throughout with their characteristically witty double act.

Spanning genres from classical to contemporary, jazz to musical theatre, the programme offered something for everyone. The orchestra opened with a dramatic performance of In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg, while the Boys’ Choir delivered a stylish and contemporary arrangement of Love Yourself, directed by Mr Maybury and accompanied with assurance on the piano by 11s pupil Alexander. The Senior Choir, notably strong in numbers this year, impressed with a rich and balanced sound in What Was I Made For? from Barbie, conducted by Director of Music Kay Le Doujet, with a full range of voices, from bass to soprano, creating particularly effective harmonies.

Soloists played a central role, with Upper and Lower Sixth students performing a varied programme, from Schubert’s Ave Maria and Bellini’s Vaga luna, che inargenti to musical theatre favourites including She Used to Be Mine from Waitress and Funny from City of Angels. Ensembles added further variety, including the Treble Voice Ensemble’s performance of Bring Me Little Water, which featured coordinated body percussion, with students clapping and clicking intricate rhythms while singing. The piece also marked one of accompanist Georgina Cassidy’s first outings as a choirmaster. The Auditioned Choir, conducted for the first time by Mr Michael Andrews, gave a confident performance of Seasons of Love from Rent.

Flagship events such as the Autumn and Spring concerts bring together ensembles and choirs, alongside soloists who perform regularly throughout the year in assemblies, lunchtime and afternoon recitals.

The concert concluded with a moment of reflection as our Upper Sixth musical performers were invited on stage by Headteacher Mr Hooke and warmly applauded for their contribution to music and the performing arts at Harrodian, marking their many years (and many school lunches!) as part of the school community.

As Director of Music Kay Le Doujet notes, the department is vibrant and full of opportunity, with consistently high standards across all year groups. A huge thank you to the Music Department and all our pupil performers for another enjoyable evening of music-making and we look forward to the second Spring Concert, featuring our younger pupils, on Wednesday 25 March.
