The 13s warmed up for the forthcoming challenge of Geography GCSE by visiting the Field Studies Centre in Epping Forest where the expert staff explained how to gather, log and analyse information using specialised equipment.

Pupils visited specific areas of the forest, measuring the girth of trees (below) to ascertain their age and investigate and measure how the predominance of different trees such as ancient beech and young birch impacted on the light intensity, the vegetation and ground cover (bottom) and the character of different layers of the soil.(above).IMG_0539.jpgIMG_0587.jpg

Along the way, they got to enjoy the beauty and serenity of a natural, mature forest that is just nine kilometres from the heart of the City of London.
