Harrodian staged its second Green Day on 30th June with a day-long programme of consciousness-and-cash-raising talks, lessons and activities
This year's Green event had a distinctly blue tinge thanks to the involvement of our special guest: diver, film maker, broadcaster and eco campaigner David Jones. David is founder of the charity Just One Ocean, an organisation dedicated to protecting the world's seas 'for future generations through science, education and communication'. He undertook a series of lectures, lessons and chats with Harrodian pupils from year 8 to the Sixth Form during the morning, drawing on his personal experience to provide a vivid picture of the pollution issues we face and the steps – both big and small – we need to take to tackle them.
Alongside, these thought-provoking presentations, Harrodians were busy doing their bit for the Green cause with events including Bikeathon circuits of the grounds (all ages), a Peddle my Wheels second hand bike market, the planting of a new magnolia tree in the French Garden (Prep) and a ‘Jungle Run’ charity obstacle course (13s and 14s). In the afternoon, the whole school gathered on the field for a special photography session.
The popularity of the event reflects the growing passion of Harrodians for the ecological cause. In 2019, the school joined the Eco Schools initiative, a nationwide movement that aims 'to give students an environmental voice'. Much more work remains to be done, of course, but we are delighted that the school has completed Eco Schools’ seven steps that ‘drive change and improve environmental awareness in their school, local community and beyond’, thus earning Harrodian a ‘Green Flag’ award.
