Pre-Prep Blog: Bringing Literacy to Life

Book character assembly

Literacy Week is always a highlight of the Pre-Prep calendar and this year the event has both delighted and challenged the children in equal measures.

There has been a strong emphasis on spelling and in Monday’s workshop with Andy Salmon, better known as Sir Linkalot, the children enjoyed using links to remember those difficult English words that do not conform to a regular pattern.

There were some amazing entries into our Literacy competition where families worked with their children to create as many words as possible from 'DUSTBIN.' Friendly competition resulted in one family finding a very impressive 300 individual words. The children were equally inspired in their lessons to compile lists of words using ‘The Harrodian School.'

In class this week our children have been writing book reviews of their favourite stories and you can see these displayed outside each of the classrooms.

Our Reception to PP2 pupils also enjoyed a Perform acting workshop (below), where they used their imaginations to enact a story.

This morning’s Book Character Assembly featured some firm traditional children’s book characters but also some new characters too. The children looked amazing and have hopefully inspired their peers with their choice of character.

A special thanks to our Literacy Coordinator Miss Engel for preparing the weeks' activities and also to my Pre-Prep staff who surpassed themselves with their costumes this morning.
