Pre-Prep Blog: It Takes Two

Reading buddies Pre-Prep

Reception is nearing the end of their first term at Harrodian and all of the children have enjoyed a wide range of learning and experiences. One of their favourite times of the week is pairing up with the PP3 classes for Reading Buddies. The children choose special stories to read and chat about together. This forms solid friendships and the PP3s love the chance to help and mentor the younger children.

The benefits of paired reading are manifold. By reading together children can learn (by example) how to read with expression and the right pace, and they can also pursue their own interests and make their own decisions regarding reading material. The process of reading out loud also encourages some of our pupils to try reading materials that may be just above their normal reading level but it also helps build orals skills so that reluctant readers can work towards reading in front of a group.

We are very fortunate at School to have the most amazing Junior Library, stocked with a range of books, designed to appeal to all children, regardless of their interests or reading ability. From PP2 all the children in the Pre-Prep have a library lesson each week, but even in Reception and PP1 children are very welcome to pop into the library and borrow books before or after school. It is our passion here at Harrodian to develop children who are enthusiastic readers, who can experience the joy and delight that a good book can bring, and to share this together.

Next week our Reading Buddies look forward to exchanging Christmas cards before the holiday break.
